I’ve captured a few highlights from recent days.
David Shearer’s speech on Sunday was described by many party faithful as the best leader’s speech they’d heard at a conference. Focusing on the big challenges facing our economy, Shearer said ‘don’t let anyone tell you Government can’t do big things to change people’s lives’. He announced Labour’s plan to build 100,000 affordable houses over 10 years, and to require landlords to meet minimum healthy-housing standards.
Local visits to Industry Training Organisation sites are a fun part of the job. I especially enjoyed presenting Sam Cooper and Sam Cadogan with their National Certificates in Carpentry. Just rewards after around 4 years hard graft each as an apprentice.
Pictures: from Shearer’s speech x2; with members of Dunedin Young Labour at conference; at unveiling of my Tom Field portrait at Selwyn College; with apprentices, and trainers at Stevenson and Williams Ltd’s site at McGlashan College x3; visiting apprentices and qualified hairdressers at Darryl McNamara’s Aart on Saint Andrew salon.
